Can Sterility Occur When Gonorrhea Is Not Treated?

In short, yes, gonorrhea if left untreated can cause several health complications some of which can be quite serious in nature. Both men and women could become infertile if they have become infected with the gonorrhea bacterium and do not get treated in timely fashion. In women the gonorrhea infection can spread into the fallopian tubes and uterus which can cause pelvic inflammatory disease. PID can lead to the formation of abscesses that can permanently damage the fallopian tubes and thus lead to infertility. Although unlikely, in men infertility might arise if gonorrhea is allowed to cause Epididymitis. Epididymitis is an inflammation of the coiled tubes behind the testicles where sperm is stored.
